コールダーの弟、サム。一人でお座りが出来ました！出来なかったことが出来るようになった瞬間って、なんていい顔をするんでしょう。

Calder’s baby brother, Sam. He sat up on his own! Look how proud he is!! There is nothing more than a face of a child who accomplished something for the first time, isn’t there?

大人にだって同じ位いい顔が出来るはずっ。
１ヶ月に１つだけ、今まで「苦手だな」と思ってた人たちの集まりに出たり、やったこともないことをしたりする機会を作りました。

Columbus received cherry trees from Japan日本からコロンバスに桜が贈呈されました

先週の金曜日、とても素敵なイベントに参加させて頂きました。
Last Friday, I was invited to a very nice celebration in Columbus.

日本がアメリカのワシントンD.C.に桜を贈ったのは1912年のこと。100周年を記念する今年、オハイオ州のコロンバスに20本の桜が日本から贈呈されました。

100 years ago, Japan sent thousands of cherry trees to Washington D.C. as a symbol of friendship between the countries. To commemorate that history, Columbus received 20 cherry trees from Japan and they were planted at the Franklin Park Conservatory last Friday.

この記念式典に参加されたタフト前オハイオ州知事は、100年前に日本から桜を受け取った当時のタフト大統領の曾孫（ひまご）に当たります。

The former Ohio Gov. Bob Taft who attended the planting ceremony is a great-grandson of President Howard Taft who accepted the original cherry trees in 1912!

オハイオはカリフォルニアに次ぎ、全米第二の日系企業が多い州。オハイオと日本の深い関係がビジネスのみならず、個人のレベルでも長く続くといいなぁと思わせるイベントでした。

Ohio is second only to California in its number of Japanese-owned businesses. I hope this tight relationship between Ohio and Japan will last forever not only at the business level, but at personal level also.

初めまして、私のジョジーン社のコレクションの中で鼻の横の赤いポチッが無いものが1つあります。
ウィッグ＆小さなハート＆背中閉じをかなえそなえており、お顔がシルスビーによく似ているのですが・・・
タグが見当たらなく・・・これは印刷ミスによるレア物なのでしょうか？それとも赤いポチッが無いドールが作られた年代があったのでしょうか？とても気になっているのでどなたか知っている方がいましたら、是非教えて下さい。宜しくお願いいたします。

【Question 12】
Hello. I have this Georgene doll which does not have red dots on the side of the nose. This has a wig, a little heart, and back of the dolls is sewn. I feel the face is very similar to a Silsby one. I cannot find a tag, but is this one of the rare Georgene dolls? Or are there any time period that those dolls were made without dots next to the nose? I’d love to know. If you have an answer to her question, please click here and help her!!

先々週の土曜日は、コールダーの日本人補修校の入園式でした。ぴかぴかの１年生ならぬK-5生！オハイオ州では日本の幼稚園年長さん(KindergartenのKに満５才で通うから５で、K-5）から高校３年生までが義務教育。という訳で土曜日だけ開かれる日本人の補修校も幼稚園の年長から始まります。

Calder had an entrance ceremony to the Japanese Language School two Sat. ago. It is a Sat only school held mostly for Japanese kids who live in Columbus area to study what they would study in Japan in Japanese.

このページのちょうど横のプロフィール写真は、実はコールダーの日本の保育園の入園式で撮ったもの。あれから５年の年月が経ち、髪の毛も随分増えました…（あっ、違うか！？笑）

The profile picture was taken at his daycare’s entrance ceremony in Japan. Five years have passed since then and he has much more hair now. lol !! When I said, “You can study Japanese again!”, Calder replied,

「これでまた日本語が覚えられるね」と私が言うと
“I only study it once a week. So I will forget it again.”（訳：「週に一回しか習わないと、また忘れちゃうよ。」）とコールダー。

うーんっ…（ため息）本は月に４冊ほど読むのですが、読んだ後３ランクに分けています。もう２度と読まないCランクの本は図書館へ寄付。良かったと思うBランクの本は「この人に」と思う方にプレゼント。そして繰り返し読むAランクの本は、いずれコールダーにも読ませたいと思って取ってあります。自らの人生の中だけでは出来ない体験を本は代わりにさせてくれます。中には日本語でないと読めない本も沢山あります。だから、コールダーには日本語をぜひとも勉強してもらいたいなぁと思っているんです。さて、どうなるかなーっ。

I read about four books a month and rank them into 3. I donate books that I will not read again to a library, and give ones that I liked very much to people who I think would enjoy them, and keep ones that I would read again… and someday that I would give to Calder. Books give us experiences that we cannot experience ourselves in our life time. Some of the books are only written in Japanese. That is why I would really love Calder to learn Japanese… We shall see how it goes!!

Join us Saturday, April 21 in Cynthiana, Kentucky for the 10th Annual Raggedy Ann Festival, 9:00am to 4:00pm. The new location is the Flat Run Veterans Park, Cynthiana (US 62 / Oddville Pike). The festival honors Cynthiana, Kentucky native R.B. Gruelle, father of Raggedy Ann’s creator Johnny Gruelle. Events include entertainment throughout the day, games, food, music, rides, animals, artwork, crafts and much more. You may want to bring a lawn chair. Cynthiana is located approximately 35 miles north of Lexington, KY.

Story untold behind a house sale…語られることのないお話

「すみません、オハイオのうちを売りたいんですけど…」赴任先のテキサスから電話があったのが去年の10月下旬。

“I’d like to sell my house in Ohio…,” he called me from transferred TX in late last Oct.

時にはメキシコから、時にはカナダからと出張で超多忙の高橋さん(仮名）と連絡を取り合い”For Sale”のサインを出したのが昨年暮れ。すぐに数件の”Showing（下見）”が入るが、思ったオファーが入りません。これは家のコンディションが価格に釣り合ってない印…。

After two months of communicating back and forth over the phone and email with Mr. Takahashi (not actual name) from wherever (Mexico, Canada, etc…) he was on business each time, we finally came to put a “For Sale” sign up at end of the year. Several showing appointments came in right away, but no decent offers… It is a sign that a condition of the house mismatches the listing price.

「高橋さん、残っている家財はどうされるつもりですか？」
「あ、家が売れたらテキサスに移します。」
「あのーっ…結婚してくれたら風呂に入りますって、ボサボサの髪の毛でお見合いに出掛けたりしないですよね…？」

“What’s your plan for all of the personal stuff throughout the house, Mr. Takahashi?”
“Oh, I will move them out when the house is sold.”
“Well, Mr. Takahashi… would you go on a blind date without showing and promise you will bath yourself after she marries you?”

家の所々に残る私財を地下室にまとめ、マスターバスのフロア張り替えとペンキ塗り、子供部屋のペンキを塗り直したところで「これなら」というオファーが。その契約書をメールで高橋さんに転送しようとしたその時、別の仲介者から電話が鳴りました。

After gathering his personal properties into one place in the basement, doing some update in the master bath, and painting on his younger son’s bedroom walls, finally a good offer came in. When I was about to forward the paperwork to Mr. Takahashi by email, my cell phone rang and it was from another agent.

4000ドル高い売値で2月中旬、契約が成立。そして先週、クロージング。アリゾナから転勤の若いカップルが高橋さんのお家の新しいオーナーとなりました。

In mid Feb., he signed a $4000 higher purchase contract. A young couple transferred from Arizona became a new owner of the house last week.

「宮本さん、また頼みがあるんだけどさ。やっぱり下の子が寂しいらしくて…　嫁さんがいないからもう一軒家はいいよ。会社がオハイオに戻してくれたら、コンド探してくれるかな？」
何かに付けて息子さんの話が出て来る高橋さん。奥様が亡くなられてから一人手で育てて来た息子さん達と離れて寂しいのはお父さんの方かも？またお手伝い出来る日を楽しみにしています。

On the closing date, a phone rang. “I want to ask you something again, Miyamoto-san. My younger son misses me. I don’t need a house without my wife. Can you find us a condo next time when and if my company transfers me back to Ohio?” Yes, Mr. Takahashi, I am more than happy to assist you soon again!

アメリカの（ラガディドキュメンタリー）DVDの件で、メールしました。まだ、寄付してないけど、ちらっとみたら（DVDは)日本に発送OKなんですよね？

ラガ友さんで何人かに聞かれたんだけど、PCじゃないと出来ない、英語、クレジットカード、その辺が絡み合って、どうしよう？という感じみたいです。

そんな感じで寄付したいけど、出来ない人も居るのかも知れません。何かよい方法あるかしら？

I emailed you about the Raggedy documentary and its DVD. I haven’t made a donation yet, but DVD can be shipped to Japan, right?

I was asked by some of my Japanese Raggedy friends about this, too, but they are not sure what to do because you cannot make a donation from a cell phone, you need a credit card payment, and it is in English…

There are people like us in Japan who would love to make a donation, but we are unable to. Is there any good way?

Today is a day to read Gruelle’s original books in Japanese.

1925年に出版された５冊目の『ラガディ・アン　ウィッシング　ペブル』のお話の続きです。

We will read Gruelle’s 5th Raggedy book, “Raggedy Ann’s Wishing Pebble” published by M.A. Donohue & Company in 1925 today. (I am translating/reading the original books since they were never published in Japanese until today…)

ラガディ・アンとアンディはミスター・ジャコウネズミのうちを出ると鏡の小川に歩いて行きました。道すがら会う人みんなにラガディ・アンが砂に埋めた魔法の石を知らないかと聞きました。

「誰が持っているかなんて、わしは知らんよ！でも、すごい石だな。お願いするだけでアイスクリームのソーダのマシーンが出て来るなんて。」バッタのおじいさんが言いました。

「そうなんだ、とっても素敵な石なのさ。ラガディ・アンがほんの２、３分持っていた間にジャコウネズミ夫妻の家にアイスクリームソーダーマシーンとペロペロキャンディの庭が登場したんだ。」ラガディ・アンディは答えます。

「ねぇ、今私思いついたことがあるの、アンディ。何だと思う？」アンは言いました。

「なあに、アン？」アンディは聞きました。

「魔法の石を私が砂に埋めた後、見つけた誰かだけど。私が砂に埋めるところを見ていたはず。そして、ペロペロキャンディの庭をお願いしているのも聴いていたはずよ。でも、ソーダマシーンのお願いをしたのは聴いてなかった。そして魔法の石を手に入れてすぐ自分のうちのそばにペロペロキャンディの庭をお願いしたはずよ。」アンは言いました。

「ソーダマシーンのお願いは聴いてなかったって？」おじいさんバッタは聞き返しました。

In 1962, Knickerbocker Toy Company in New York approached the Gruelle family to be the next producer of Raggedy dolls. The family decided to give the license to them instead of renewing the contract with Georgene Novelties Co., Inc. Knickerboker changed Ann and Andy’s hair color from orange to present red. Knickerbocker made dolls from 1962 to 1982.

This Ann was produced around late 70s to 80s in China.

This doll is a collection of Hiromi. If you are interested, please contact her directly by email.

1962年グルエル家はお人形の生産の権利をジョージーン社と更新する代わりに、ニッカーボッカー社と新たに契約をしました。ニッカーボッカー社は1962年から1982年の間、ラガディのお人形を生産しました。アンとアンディの髪の毛をオレンジから、今ではトレードマークになっている赤に変えたのはニッカーボッカー社でした。

このアンは70年代後半から80年代に中国で生産されたタイプです。お顔の形が電球のような形なのでコレクターの間ではlight bulbドールと呼ばれました。

The Applause Toy Company as a division of Knickerbocker Toy Co. started to make Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls from 1981. The license for the dolls was owned by Worth Gruelle, John B. Gruelle’s son. Later in 1983 Knickerbocker was bought by Hasbro. Applause Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls were produced in 12″, 17″, 25″, and 36″. In 1986, Macmillan Inc. purchased rights to produce certain kinds of Raggedy products including hand puppets and silk-screened dolls. So if you ever wondered there are dolls made by Applause, but licensed by Macmillan Inc., that is why.

This pair is called “side-eyed” and is 25″.

アプローズ社は、ニッカーボッカー社の１部門として1981年よりアンとアンディのお人形を作りました。お人形のライセンスはグルエルの息子ワース・グルエルの所有となっています。後、1983年にニッカーボッカー社はハズブロ社に買収されることになります。アプローズ社のドールは、31, 43, 64, 91cmの４つの大きさで作られました。1986年にはマックミラン社が特定のアンとアンディのお人形を初めとする商品化権を獲得します。アプローズ社製でありながら、マックミラン社のコピーライトが付いているお人形があるのはこのためです。

このペアはサイドアイ（横目）と呼ばれるもので、64cmの大きさです。

Hi This is Akiko.

金曜日は我が家の前に住むフランチェスカとベロニカの言葉に甘えて、コールダーとサムを置いてパパとデート。NCAAのバスケの試合観戦に行って来ました。試合は夜９時過ぎ。近くのレストランで食事を取ってから観戦、戻ると夜中の１２時を回っていました。それでも「またいつでも言ってね！」と笑顔の二人。こんな隣人がいるコロンバス大好きっ！

Thanks to our neighbors, Francesca and Veronica, we went to a dinner and NCAA basketball game without Calder and Sam last Friday. It was after midnight when we returned home, but they welcomed us home with a smile. We love our neighborhood!!

Today is a day to read Gruelle’s original books in Japanese.

1925年に出版された５冊目の『ラガディ・アン　ウィッシング　ペブル』のお話の続きです。

We will read Gruelle’s 5th Raggedy book, “Raggedy Ann’s Wishing Pebble” published by M.A. Donohue & Company in 1925 today. (I am translating/reading the original books since they were never published in Japanese until today…)

ウッドチャックのジョージの足の上に座り込んでいたミスター・ジャコウネズミが立ち上がると、ジョージは立ち上がりました。そうしたかと思うとまたジョージの足は宙に舞い上がってしまいました。

ジョージは足を宙でばたばたさせながら「なんだか頭がくらくらするよ。」と叫びました。

「ちょっと待って、人差し指と中指を交差させてみて！」しばらくじっと考え込んでいたラガディ・アンが叫びました。

ジョージの足が地面に無事に着地するのを見て、アンは笑いました。「ほらね！魔法の石を持ってる誰かが私たちが石を取り返そうとしているのを知って、いたずらしているのよ。」アンはここまで言うと、今度はひそひそ声で「それでね、指を交差させるとそれは『王様のX』という意味で、魔法がかからなくなるのよ。」

「それならアン」聞いていたアンディが口を挟みました。「じゃあ僕たちが魔法にかけられたらどうなるの？」

「わからないわ、だって私たちには交差させる指がないんだもの…」ラガディ・アンは笑いながら答え終わるか終わらないかのうちに、ラガディ・アンは急に宙に舞い上がったかと思うと、逆さまの頭から地面に着地しました。

「こんなのちっとも平気よ！だって私の頭はふわふわの柔らかいコットンがいっぱい詰まっているんだもの。だから頭もくらくらしないわ。それよりも、なんだかとっても楽しい気持ち！」アンは笑って言いました。

すると、アンの体がまた宙に舞い上がったかと思うと足から地面に着地しました。

「ほらね。魔法の石の持ち主は私たちをからかっているのよ。だから私たちが喜んでいると分かると、魔法をやめるのよ。私たちを喜ばせたくないんだわ。なんて自分勝手なのかしら。私たちが困った振りさえしなかったら、いたずらはすぐにやめてくれるはずよ。」ラガディ・アンはシューボタンの目を輝かせながら言いました。
